From 1860s diversified into silk production after S C Lister, later Lord Masham, developed a machine for converting silk waste. Manningham Mills destroyed by fire and rebuilt from early 1870s on a huge scale to become the largest textile works in Yorkshire. Incorporated as a public company 1889. Noted for [failed] 19 week strike by workforce in 1890-91, well known in labour history and in the longer term giving rise to the Independent Labour Party.
