Traced origins to 1837 when established by William Lepard, 1735-1805, in Tooley St, Southwark, as a stationer. By 1780 also a papermaker at Hamper Mill, near Watford. 1798 stationery and papermaking activities separated, but remained closely associated, when London business renamed Applegarth & Smith. From c1790s renamed Lepard Smith & Lepard. Latterly wholesale stationers and paper merchants. 1874 businesses reunited but papermaking discontinued 1879. Incorporated 1891 as Lepards & Smiths Ltd. Continued as paper merchants until recent years
