Traced origins to 1785. Emerged as commission agents and known as Leech, Harrison & Co by 1837. Thomas B Forwood, 1810-84, joined the partnership in 1837 when known as Leech Harrison & Forwood. (Sir) Arthur Forwood and (Sir) William Forwood bought out their father in 1862 and made substantial profits from cotton speculation during American Civil War when emerged as leading cotton merchants. Established branches in USA and India and also established a shipping line to West Indies and New York. Continued into 20th century
