Traced origins to c1850 when established by Christopher King as a stevedoring business in port of Bristol. 1859 acquired first tug and thereafter leading tug owners and stevedores at Bristol until after 1945. Incorporated 1908. By 1928 also operating at Avonmouth and Portishead. Post 1945 diversified into a range of activities as tug owning and stevedoring declined - eg joinery manufacture, ship chandlery, fruit and vegetable dealing, etc. 1978 established a holding company, C J King (Holdings) Ltd when still family owned
