Traced origins to the pin making and wire drawing business of James Howard which was acquired by John Johnson shortly after 1800 and renamed in 1838 Richard Johnson & Brother. By 1848 also making wide range of wire products, eg sieves, brushes, flour machines, etc. Later made wire for fencing, barb wire, ropes, etc. From mid 19th century focused, inter alia, on making wire for telegraph cables and suspension bridge cables. 1864 known as Richard Johnson & Nephew. Early 1900 diversified into copper wire making. Floated 1928. 1960 acquired Peerless Fence & Products Ltd and late in 60s Spencer Wire Co Ltd. 1970 Jessel Securities Ltd acquired a major interest. 1971 acquired John Rigby & Sons Ltd. 1973 merged with Thos Firth & John Brown Ltd to form Johnson & Firth Brown Ltd
