Established in London in 1896 as a branch of S Japhet, brokers, of Berlin which had been formed at Frankfurt by Samey Japhet, 1856-1954, in 1880. 1900 London became firm's principal office and in 1910 Sir Ernest Cassel became a sleeping partner. Also closely connected with Sir Basil Zaharoff, armaments dealer. Incorporated 1921. Emerged as a leading London investment bank focused on trade finance. 1953 converted to a public company and was subsequently acquired by Charterhouse Industrial Development Co Ltd when it came to trade as Charterhouse Japhet Ltd. Name ceased to be used 1980s.[2023]
