Traced origins to James Ballantyne, 1772-1833, of Kelso who early on printed the works of Sir Walter Scott. Moved to Edinburgh 1803 and became a leading Edinburgh printing house. Initially had close connections with Scott who was a partner until 1826. Collapsed 1826 but continued, being known under various names including Ballantyne Press and, latterly, Ballantyne Hanson & Co Ltd. 1915 merged with Spottiswoode & Co. Connected also with John Ballantyne & Co, 1809-13, publisher of Scott's works until its difficulties in 1811 when its stock was acquired by Archibald Constable & Co
