Ballantyne family traced origins as woollen cloth manufacturers to David Ballantyne, 1773-1855, who was a master weaver at Galashields from 1796. Most notably Henry Ballanyne, 1802-65, by 1820s was making tweed at Innerleithen. In c1850s he moved to Walkerburn to establish Henry Ballantyne & Sons. Following his death three of his sons established in 1870 Ballantyne Brothers, woollen cloth manufacturers at Innerleithen where they built Waverley Mills. In 1883 David Ballantyne left this business to form D Ballantyne & Co at March St Mills, Peebles. 1920 D Ballantyne and Ballantyne Brothers merged to form D Ballantyne Brothers & Co Ltd.1921 diversified into hosiery business, making men's clothing. Still operating late 1940s
