Traces origins to 1827 when established in Edinburgh by George Ballantine, d1891, as a grocery business selling in particular whiskies. Opened a second but larger establishment at Glasgow in 1865 which focused on selling wines and spirits. Started whisky blending with success leading to exports. Incorporated in c1880s. 1919 acquired by Barclay & McKinlay and in 1937 sold on to Hiram Walker of Canada who expanded business by acquiring and building distilleries. Post 1945 emerged as a top selling brand. Subsequently other owners and continues
