Traced origins to 1879 and the business then established by Alfred Harman, 1848-1913, to make gelatine dry plates. 1886 trading as Britannia Works Co and in 1891 incorporated as Britannia Works Co Ltd. Reorganised 1898 as a public company, Britannia Works Co (1898) Ltd. 1901 renamed Ilford Ltd. Diversified into other photographic equipment including film, paper, cameras, x-ray film, chemicals, published information, etc. From late 1920s made several acquisitions including parts of Amalgamated Photographic Equipment Manufacturers Ltd and Selo Ltd. 1958 ICI Ltd acquired major interest. 1968 acquired by Ciba, later Ciba Geigy. 1989 sold to International Paper of USA to become Ilford Anitec.
