Established by John Baker, 1843-1904, in 1874 in partnership with Thomas Burnett to make wheels and axles for railway locomotives and rolling stock at Conisborough. Initially assembled them from bought in components. 1884 relocated to Rotherham where also made steel. Briefly made railway wagons. Made munitions, especially shells, in world wars. Public company 1920 as John Baker & Co (Rotherham) 1920 Ltd. 1929 acquired Henry Bessemer & Co Ltd when known as John Baker & Bessemer Ltd. 1963 acquired by United Steel Companies Ltd and English Steel Corp Ltd and closed as part of rationalisation to remove spare capacity
