Established 1920 when Joseph Baker & Sons Ltd acquired Perkins Engineers Ltd to form Baker Perkins Ltd. The latter traced its origins to an American, Jacob Perkins, who started out as an engineer in 1819 in London and whose successors diversified into making baking ovens in London in 1851. By 1870s known as A M Perkins & Sons and incorporated 1889. 1893 reorganisaed as Werner, Pfleiderer & Perkins Ltd following merger with the baking machinery makers, Werner & Pfleiderer of London. Relocated to Peterborough in 1903. Joseph Baker was founded in c1878 by Joseph Baker, formerly of Ontario, and made flour sifters at Willesden, London, and son afterwards machinery for making bread, biscuits and confectionery. It emerged as the leading manufacturer of food processing equipment in the UK. Incorporated 1902. Baker Perkins converted to a public company in 1957 and it remained UK leader in manufacturing bread, biscuit and confectionery making machinery. 1989 acquired by APV Plc and operated as APV Baker Ltd. 1988 acquired Tweedy of Burnley, makers of dough mixers. 2006 divested to private investors as Baker Perkins Ltd.
