Established 1860 by W S Hudswell to build railway locomotives and other heavy engineering equipment such as steam hammers. Took over part of the works, known as the Railway Foundry, of E B Wilson & Co, which traced origins to c1840 and which closed in 1858. Known as Hudswell Clarke & Rodgers from 1870 and as Hudswell Clarke & Co from 1881. Incorporated 1899. Built standard and narrow gauge locomotives including several for shunting, amusement park use, etc. Other output included mining equipment such as hydraulic pit props. Also did secret military work post 1945. Closed 1960s
