Traced origin to 1854 when James Howden, 1832-1913, established himself as a consulting engineer, designing machine tools and trading for part of this time as Robertson & Howden. By early 1860s his focus was boiler and marine engine design and in 1862 started manufacturing his own products as James Howden & Co, marine engineers and boiler makers, as well as industrial fans for airflow. Emerged as leaders in these fields. After 1900 manufactured steam turbines largely for land use, especially electricity generation. Incorporated 1907. Subsequently specialised in related boiler equipment such as pre heaters, fans, dust collectors, etc. Public company 1939. By late 1940s manufacturing metal furniture. 1970 reorganised under a holding company, Howden Group Ltd, later Howden Group Plc. 1997 acquired by Charter Plc
