Traced origins to 1816 when Alexander Baird, increasingly assisted by his sons, led by James Baird, 1802-76, leased coal bearing land at Rochsolloch, Airdrie, and established a thriving coal mining business. Became known as William Baird & Co. c1829 diversified into iron production and, partly through Eglinton Iron Co, soon built a world leading business centred on Gartsherrie, Coatbridge. 1886 acquired iron ore mines in Spain. Incorporated 1893. 1914-18 developed and operated Raasay Iron Ore Mine on island of Raasay. 1939 merged with Scottish Iron & Steel Co Ltd to form Bairds & Scottish Steel Ltd
