Established 1881 in Glasgow by Hugh H Baird and John Tatlock as makers of laboratory equipment. Moved to Hatton Garden, London, in 1889. 1905 moved to Walthamstow. Subsequently also made laboratory chemicals. 1959 acquired by Derbyshire Stone Group which later became part of Tarmac. 1969 acquired by G D Searle & Co Ltd. 1978 acquired by Merck, a German pharmaceutical business, and integrated with BDH Ltd (formerly British Drug Houses Ltd) in 1987
