Hornby railways brand originated with Meccano Ltd which traced its origins to Liverpool in 1901 and which made clockwork/electric model railways from 1920s. 1964 Meccano was acquired by Lines Brothers Ltd, owners, inter alia, of Tri-ang brand which had acquired Rovex Plastics Ltd, makers of model railways, in 1951 and moved it to a new factory at Margate in 1954 as Rovex Scale Models Ltd. Merged Tri-ang with Hornby brands to form Tri-ang Hornby based at Margate. 1971 Lines were bankrupt when Tri-ang Hornby acquired by Dunbee Combex Marx. DCM collapsed 1980 when Hornby railways business acquired by management and called Hornby Hobbies Ltd. Converted to public company 1986 as Hornby Group Plc. Subsequently made several acquisitions and continues
