Traced origins to late 18th century as a foundry owned by Holmes & Price. By 1840s making gas plant. In 1850, when led by William Cartwright Holmes, known as W C Holmes & Co and quickly emerged as an industry leader in production of gas making plant but also manufactured structural steelwork, especially bridges. Initially made complete gasworks, latterly specialist machinery for them. Incorporated 1910. 1947 acquired B Thornton Ltd of Huddersfield. 1949 reorganised when a holding company, BHD Engineers Ltd, formed and when Bryan Donkin Co Ltd of Chesterfield acquired
