Traced origins to Crawford & Co, 1866-67, which established an inland shipbuilding business, building small craft and based on the Forth & Clyde Canal. 1867 acquired by James & John Hay, shipping agents, shipowners and traders. 1896 incorporated as J & J Hay Ltd when shipbuilding separated from a developing coastal shipping business. Reorganised 1921 when all Hay family's interests merged into J Hay & Sons Ltd. 1956 shipping interests acquired by F T Everard when all other assets placed in J & J Hay Ltd. 1963, following closure of Forth & Clyde Canal, merged with Hamilton & McPhail to form Hays Hamilton Ltd
