Rebuilt the original business which came to have very wide ranging interests including fishing, whaling, shipbuilding, shipping, fish curing as well as distribution and retailing interests. Incorporated 1921 as Hay & Co (Lerwick) Ltd . By mid 1970s its huge range of activities included wholesale of coal and building products; retail shops selling hardware, ironmongery, fancy goods, etc; local shipping; agency work for shipping, air transport, insurance, etc, companies; services to North Sea oil industry; etc. 1975 acquired by John Fleming & Co Ltd, timber merchants at Aberdeen
