Established 1874 by George and James Hodson as The Hathern Station Brick & Terra Cotta Co to make engineering bricks, chimney pots, etc, at Sutton Bonnington. From 1914 diversified into chemical stoneware for the chemical industry. Between wars became well known for ivory coloured faience tiles which decorated facades of cinemas, etc, covering whole elevations. From 1934 known as Hathernware Ltd and from 1955 as Hathernware Ceramics Ltd. 1961 merged with Shaws to form Shaw Hathernware Group. Continues as Naylor Hathernware, manufacturers of chemically resistant ceramics
