Traced origins to the Liverpool shipbrokers, Samuel Brown & Son & Co which were owned by Thomas, 1815-88, and James, 1821-91, Harrison from 1853 when renamed Thos & Jas Harrison. Shipowners from 1857. 1871 formed Charente Steamship Co, which was incorporated in 1884, to own ships while Harrisons continued as their managers. By 1914 fleet numbered 70 vessels. 1970 diversified into bulk carriers. From 1970s in decline and owned three ships by 1987 although managed others. Ceased ship owning/management in 2000 although continued other activities as Harrison Logistics
