Traced origins to 1801 when established by Robert Harrild, 1780-1853, and Edward Billing. Initially were printers, especially of books. Billing withdrew 1807. By 1809 had diversified into design and manufacture of ink rollers for printing. By 1832 had given up printing and were developing as a printer's supplies business. By then known as Harrild & Sons. From mid century started manufacture of wider range of printing equipment including printing presses and ancilliary equipment such as addressing machines, folding machines, perforating machines, guillotines, etc, etc. Also did maintenance and repairs work. Sometime associated with John and George Baxter. 1872 established Wharfedale Iron Works, later Bremner Machine Co Ltd, at Otley to make printing equipment. Incorporated 1909. Still operating 1950s
