Traces origins to the early 18th century, perhaps 1730. From 1818 owned by William and Thomas Avery and known as W & T Avery. By 1880s major manufacturer of weighing machines, notably industrial weighbridges, and scales with three factories. Also made testing machines, eg for chains. Had established ironfounding by 1854. Incorporated 1891 and public company 1894. 1895 bought Soho Foundry. In 20th century expanded by acquisition, eg Parnall & Sons Ltd (1899), Saml Denison & Son Ltd (1920) and Geo Driver & Son Ltd (1959). 1979 acquired by GEC Ltd and has since had several owners
