Notes:

Traced origins to Thomas Aveling, 1824-82, who in c1850 established a workshop at Rochester and in c1858 developed a traction engine. From 1862 joined by Richard T Porter to form Aveling & Porter. Early on had works at Strood, opened 1861. Emerged as leading manufacturers of agricultural machinery, eg traction engines, and steam rollers and also, early on, steam road vehicles. Incorporated 1895. Focused on steam roller production, becoming the dominant UK manufacturer. Formed part of Agricultural & General Engineers Ltd in 1919 which collapsed in 1932. Combined with Barford & Perkins Ltd in 1934 to form Aveling Barford Ltd based at Grantham [2024]
