Traced origins to 1811 when established in Brick Lane by Charles F Hamilton, 1783-1856. Became known as Hamilton & Co and specialised in manufacture of paint brushes. 1858 acquired by Charles Watkins and thereafter expanded rapidly to become an industry leader. Moved to new premises in Clerkenwell in 1887 and relocated to Harrow from 1890s. Incorporated 1903. After 1945 established overseas subsidiaries and acquired UK businesses. 1955 merged with Star Brush Co Ltd to form Hamilton Star Ltd. 1983-85 acquired by Blundell Permoglaze, later bought by management and in 1989 sold to Lionheart Plc who in 1990 merged it with Acorn Decorating Products to form Hamilton Acorn Ltd
