Notes:

Established 1785 by John Hall, d1836, and developed into a general engineering business. Early on specialised in papermaking machinery but also, inter alia, printing, shipbuilding and food canning machinery, steam engines, boilers, etc. Sometime known as John Hall & Sons and, from 1836, as J & E Hall. Associated with Richard Trevithick and Bryan Donkin. John Hall also made gunpowder at Faversham and paper at Horton Kirby. From late 1870s renewed by Everard Hesketh as manufacturers of refrigeration plant, especially for ships and brewing industry, using carbon dioxide making machinery. In this emerged as an industry leader. Incorporated 1888 and converted to public company 1900. c1906 started lorry manufacture until c1926. From 1920s P&O Steam Navigation Co was a major shareholder. 1959 merged with Thermotank Ltd of Glasgow, leading marine air conditioning equipment manufacturers, and designers to form Hall Thermotank Ltd. 1976 acquired by APV Holdings Ltd to form its Hall Thermotank Division. In 2020 continues as JEH Group, a division of Daikin Group
