Notes:

Timothy Hackworth, 1786-1850, locomotive engine. Worked initially as an engineer at the Wylam Colliery, Northumberland, of Christopher Blackett where he was involved in the conversion of its tramway to steam locomotives. Later at Walbottle Colliery, Tyne & Wear. Locomotive engineer of Stockton & Darlington Railway Co, 1825-40, where he did pioneering work in design and introduction of new locomotives. 1833 established an engineering works, called Soho Works, at Shildon, sometime managed by his brother Thomas, which built railway locomotives and stationary steam engines for mines. From 1840 operated Soho Works himself, building locomotives, stationary engines and a wide range of machinery for manufacturing industry. This business was continued by his son, John W, after Hackworth's death in 1850
