Established in 1768 by Stephen Austin, d1818, as a local printer. From 1820s known as Stephen Austin & Sons. Local newspaper owners and printers from 18th to late 20th century. 1772 established the short-lived 'Hartford Mercury' and in 1834 'The Reformer', later renamed the 'Hertfordshire Mercury & County Press'. Other newspapers subsequently purchased and finally held by Stephen Austin Newspapers Ltd. Early on jobbing printers. Printed oriental books for, inter alia, the East India Co from mid 19th century as well as general books for London publishers. 1903 incorporated. Continues in 2010 at Hertford
