Traced origins to James Gridley who in 1865 established a saw mill at Malden and developed as a timber merchant and importer business. 1875 relocated to Kingston upon Thames. Early on sometime known as J & F Gridley. 1900 opened new timber yard at Weybridge. 1913 business was split between three partners with interests at Kingston, Hampton Wick and Weybridge going to Gridley & Co while those at Woking went to F W Brewer and those at Godalming went to Gridley & Spring. 1921 Gridley & Co merged with George Mirkin of Walton on Thames to form Gridley Mirkin & Co Ltd.
