Traced origins to 1856 when established by Thomas Greenwood, d1873, and John Batley, both formerly employed by Sir Peter Fairbairn's Leeds based Wellington Engineering Works. Early on focused on silk and flax making machinery, later armaments making machinery, especially for small arms and including cartridge cases, and also general machine tools. Rapidly emerged as a leading engineering business making an exceptionally wide range of machinery for a broad range of industries. Incorporated 1888 as a public company when employed 1,500. Latterly also built light locomotives and produced ammunition. 1960s acquired by Fairbairn Lawson of Leeds, subsequently sold on to Hunslet Holdings and closed
