Traced origins to Alexander Bernstein, c1860-1922, who established a film theatre at Edmonton, along with property interests, in 1908. By his death had 20 film theatres which then came under management of Sidney Bernstein, later Lord Bernstein, 1899-1993. Developed as a leading cinema chain with interests in live theatre which interests were sometime known as Granada Theatres Ltd. Listed business from 1930s. Early 1950s established Granada Television Ltd to operated the independent television contract for Manchester-Liverpool region. 1960s diversified into television rental, motorway service stations, bingo, publishing, etc. From 1980s emerged as a major UK media and catering business, as Granada Media Plc merging with Carlton Communications Plc in 2003 to form ITV Plc.
