Shortly afterward diversified the business by building a very large and advanced woollen textile mill at Bean Ing, Leeds; subsequently he acquired others, notably Armley Mills. Developed as a leading business but its major component remained cloth trading. Management passed to his sons, John and William, in 1820s and the firm, known as Benjamin Gott & Sons, remained a major force until the mid 19th century. Benjamin developed an important country estate and house at Armley from 1792, owning it from 1802
