Traced origins to William Gossage, 1799-1877, a chemist, who in 1855 established a retail pharmacy in Leamington where he soon made Leamington salts. 1831 started to make bleaching agents and akalis at Stoke Prior, Worcestershire. Subsequently made white lead at Birmingham, 1841-44, and undertook copper smelting at Neath, 1844-48. 1850 moved to Widnes initially making chemicals but in 1855 started soap production. Emerged as a leading manufacturer of the latter, selling especially overseas. 1911 acquired by Brunner Mond & Co Ltd and subsequently acquired by Lever Brothers Ltd in 1919
