Traced origins to 1843 when Merry & Cunninghame, coal and iron masters, established an ironworks at Glengarnock. 1880s diversified into steel. Made, inter alia, steel plates, angles, tinplate bar, etc. c1890 reorganised when split into Merry & Cunninghame Ltd and Glengarnock Iron & Steel Co Ltd based on Glengarnock Iron Works and Ardeer Iron Works. Owned associated coal and ironstone mines. Sometime established Glengarnock Chemical Co Ltd to deal with waste products. 1916, with encouragement from the Ministry of Munitions, acquired by David Colville & Sons Ltd. The Works were subsequently past of British Steel Corp
