Traced origins to David Gestetner, 1854-1939, a Hungarian, who settled in London and in 1881 formed Gestetner Cyclograph Co and started to make document duplication kits based on stencils cut by a stylus pen and, subsequently, a typewriter. Later developed into duplication machines. Initially sold products through the stationery business of Fairholme & Co. Opened works at Tottenham, London, in c1906 and developed a worldwide market for the world's first modern duplication technology. Incorporated as D Gestetner Ltd in 1922. 1929 converted to a public company. Opened first overseas factory, in USA, in 1929. Diversified into photocopying machines in c1973. Sometime known as Gestetn er Plc. Mid 1980s, when still under management of Gestetner family, acquired by AFP Group Plc. 1995 acquired by Ricoh Corp of Japan [2023]
