Traced origins to 1748 and first publication of Aberdeen's Journal by James Chalmers, d1764. 1876 sold by Chalmers family to newly formed Aberdeen & North of Scotland Newspaper & Printing Co Ltd when converted to a daily newspaper. From 1879 published Aberdeen Evening Express. 1893 acquired Northern Newspaper Co Ltd. Emerged as Aberdeen's leading newspaper group. Also printers. 1922 merged with Aberdeen Free Press and at same time reconstructed as Aberdeen Newspapers Ltd and newspaper renamed Aberdeen Press & Journal. 1928 acquired by Allied Newspapers Ltd and in 1959 newspapers sold on to Thomson Organisation. Subsequently owned by Northcliffe Newspapers Group (Daily Mail Group) and thereafter D C Thomson & Co Ltd
