Notes:

Traced origins to William Galloway, 1768-1836, millwright, who started business in Manchester around 1800. By 1808-09 trading as Galloway & Bowman and by c1820 as Galloway, Bowman & Glasgow. By 1817 referred to as millwrights, engineers and ironfounders. Made wide range of equipment including waterwheels and textile making machinery. By 1830 making locomotives which led on to production of stationary steam engines. Sometime joined by William's sons, John, 1804-94, and William, b1796, who in 1835 established a separate business, W & J Galloway at Knott Mill Ironworks. Early on this made steam engines, equipment for gasworks, boilers, lifting equipment, etc. Incorporated 1889. 1895 known as Galloways Ltd. Reconstructed 1899. Closed 1932
