Traced origins to the Scottish cinema and film distribution businesses established by John Maxwell, 1877-1940, from 1912. 1923 acquired Wardour Films Ltd and moved to London in 1925. Established film production interests at Elstree and in 1928 established Associated British Cinemas Ltd, a public company which was built into a leading cinema chain. 1933 merged production, distribution and exhibition interests into Associated British Picture Corp of which ABC Ltd remained a trading subsidiary. By late 1930s largest UK cinema circuit. Subsequently controlled by Warner Brothers. Later diversified into television broadcasting and acquired by EMI
