Traces origins to a long established tea importing business, in due course known as E W Fyffe Son & Co and managed by Edward W Fyffe. 1888 started to import and distribute bananas from Canary Islands. From c1897 known as Fyffe, Hudson & Co and from about that time controlled by banana growers as Fyffe, Hudson & Co Ltd. 1901 merged with the important fruit importing division of Liverpool shipping company, Elder Dempster, to form Elders & Fyffes Ltd. 1902 a substantial interest acquired by United Fruit Corp of USA and fully owned by them from 1913. Became Fyffes Group Ltd in 1969. Sold by United Brands, by then owners of UFC, in 1986 to FII Plc of Ireland which in due course changed its name to Fyffes Plc in 1990
