Traced origins to Joseph Fry, 1728-87, a successful apothecary at Bristol from 1753 who started in c1759 to make chocolate. Known as Fry, Vaughan & Co in 1761 following acquisition of the business of Walter Churchman and quickly sold its products well outside Bristol. On Joseph's death the business was led by his widow as Anna Fry & Son and subsequently by his son and grandsons, notably Francis, 1803-86, as J S Fry & Sons. 1822 largest chocolate producer in Britain. 1896 incorporated. 1919 merged with Cadbury Brothers to form British Cocoa & Chocolate Co Ltd.
