Notes:
Established in 1901 by merger of Fenwick, Stobbart & Co Ltd of London, owners of Wm France & Co Ltd, and H C Pelly & Co Ltd, owners of East London Steamship Co & Steam Colliers Ltd. Wm France, which traced its origins to before 1765, operated coastal shipping between London and Humber ports carrying especially coal and wool. Fenwicks, in existence before 1843, had wide ranging interests as shipowners and traders. These included London/North East coal trade and in 19th century UK/Australia wool/skins/wheat/etc trade. Pellys owned and hired out a fleet of colliers, including to Wm France and Cory. The merged company focused on coastal coal trade and became a leading operator. Also developed insurance broking interests as France Fenwick (Insurance) Ltd and from 1923 obtained a major interest in Denaby & Cadeby Main Collieries Ltd, later Yorkshire Amalgamated Collieries Ltd. Still in existence in 1970s
