Traced origins to James Foster, d1861, and Richard Janson, d1830, who in 1825 established Foster & Janson, stockbrokers. Renamed Foster & Braithwaite 1835. Closely associated with the Lloyd banking business. In 19th century specialised in railway stocks and emerged as a leader. Also a leader in company promotion early 20th century. Acquired 1989 by Credit Commerciale de France [2023]
