Notes:
Traced origins in business to Richard Foley, 1551-1600, a nailer at Dudley, whose son, Richard, c1580-1657, also a nailer and later leading ironmaster, initally also at Dudley and later at Stourbridge, came to operate a large number of furnaces, forges, slitting mills, etc, employing waterpower, in several partnerships in the Midlands. London warehouse opened 1638 when selling output nationally. Supplied ordnance to army. Succeeded in business by his sons, especially Richard, d1678, Thomas, 1617-77, and Robert, c1626-76, who extended further the family's iron making empire. Richard developed his iron production, iron ore and coal extraction interests in Staffordshire and Cheshire. Thomas consolidated the Worcestershire and Staffordshire interests and established plant in Forest of Dean and continued to operate through several interlocking partnerships. By end of 17th century family controlled a huge iron making and selling business with production focused on Stour Valley, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Forest of Dean and elsewhere along with warehouses in London and also elsewhere. By then other family members were important including Philip and Paul. Works were gradually disposed of as the 18th century progressed [2023]
