Traced origins to Henry Ashworth, 1728-90, fustian manufacturer and owner of a Manchester warehouse by 1773. Succeeded by his son, John, 1772-1855. 1802 built first cotton mill, at New Eagley. By 1831 John's sons, Henry, 1794-1880, and Edmund, 1800-81, were in control of business when known as H & E Ashworth; Henry was the principal partner, 1818-80. 1832 acquired another cotton mill, Egerton Mill. 1854 business divided between brothers with Henry taking New Eagley Mill and trading as H Ashworth & Co. Edmund took Egerton Mill and traded as E Ashworth & Co. 1898 the former merged into English Sewing Cotton Co Ltd while the other continued until 1949 when closed. Business, which was always middle ranking, in sharp decline by 1920s and 30s. Temporarily ceased production 1939-45 and resumed briefly from 1949
