Traced origins to mid 1840s when established by William Dickinson, Joseph Wright, Richard Short and Francis Turner. Initially only moderately successful. In 1851 management of mining handed to Harrison, Carr & Co. 1867 commenced deep mining and in 1869 Jonathan Priestman became managing partner leading to a major expansion of the business. 1898 incorporated as Ashington Coal Co Ltd. Emerged as the most important colliery business on the Northumberland Coalfield. Its collieries included Ashington, Linton, Woodhorn, Ellington and Lynemouth. Assets nationalised 1947 when vested in National Coal Board
