(Sir) William Fairbairn, 1789-1874, leading manufacturing and consulting mechanical engineer, set up in partnership in 1817, until 1832, with James Lillie at Manchester. Initially designed and built mill machinery and undertook general engineering work. Later diversified into shipbuilding, building steam powered iron passenger ships in sections, etc. Operated large shipbuilding business at Millwall, London, 1835 to mid 1840s, with Andrew Murray. Joined by his son (Sir) Thomas Fairbairn, 1823-91, in 1840. Involved in design and manufacture of wide range of civil engineering projects/machinery - boilers, locomotives, bridges, cranes, waterwheels, etc, etc. A leading Manchester engineering business. Closed shortly after William Fairbairn's death
