Charles R Ashbee, 1863-1942, was a designer and architect as well as a social reformer. In independent practice from 1890. Produced modest output as architect of houses in west London and Gloucestershire where he was based from 1907. Best known by far as the creator of the Guild of Handicraft Ltd, a co-operative workshop of craftsmen who produced works based on Ashbee's designs - metalwork, furniture, jewellery, enamels, etc. Also established Essex House Press as successor to the Kelmscott Press when it closed 1897
