Established 1867 by William Austin, b1804, builder, and others as Artizans, Labourers & General Dwellings Co Ltd. Promoted by people of modest means - working people, clerks, etc, to build houses for sale or for letting to working class households. Initially operated in provincial cities but soon focus was London including Battersea. Emerged as one of the largest and most successful businesses of its kind as well as one of the most long-lived. Raised capital through issue of shares and taking in of deposits at 5%. By 1920 had built 8,000 dwellings, mostly in London but early on also in provinces, a great proportion of which were let. Renamed Artizans & General Properties Co Ltd in 1952 and in 1954 invested in commercial property. Progressively moved from residential properties, liquidated this part of its estate. By 1976 known as Artagen Properties Ltd when acquired by Sun Life Assurance Society Ltd
