Established 1919 to acquire assets of West of England & Great Beam Clay Co Ltd, Martin Brothers Ltd and North Cornwall China Clay Co Ltd, which then handled c66% of UK output. Business was extraction of kaolin for, inter alia, porcelain and paper manufacture. Subsequently made many other acquisitions in the china clay industry, most notably its chief competitors, Lovering China Clays Ltd and H D Pochin & Co Ltd, in 1932 when the trading business became English Clays Lovering Pochin & Co Ltd. Diversified into quarrying, engineering, etc, and had large transport interests. 1968 acquired Pike Bros, Fayle & Co Ltd of Wareham. Sometime known as EEC Group Plc, latterly as English China Clays Plc. 1999 acquired by Imerys of France.
